Blogging can have enormous benefits. Becoming associated with people in various blogging communities can lead to professional networking opportunities, jobs, internships, and a host of learning experiences. Starting a blog about a professional topic that one often encounters in his or her studies is especially beneficial for college students; as it provides a place to hash out thoughts and move forward in the right direction. Here are some specific areas in which blogging might be helpful.

Eye Opening Discussions.

Humans are sometimes rigid when it comes to thinking; tending to see things in a limited perspective. This is great if one is writing a paper about his or her thoughts, but when it comes to learning many perspectives are key to seeing the big picture. Beginning a blog that follows along with one’s educational major can assist him or her in seeking help in understanding troubling topics, and can open one’s eyes to the different ways in which others see the same issue. My College Blogger can be a great place to begin.

Practice Makes Perfect.

College curriculum requires a lot of writing, and good writing skills take much practice. In college, students write papers for only one audience; the teacher. Composing an effective written piece requires taking into account the audience that will be reading it. Unlike writing for a single audience, such as a college professor, writing for internet publication provides for a very diverse audience. Learning how to write for such a group can help to hone skills of adaptation.

In blogging, one not only writes for the audience, but he or she gets to interact with them as well. It is this interaction that gives readers a chance to express how they feel about the information; ultimately providing one with a way to gauge how adequate he or she is at presenting personal interpretations to others. This opportunity can provide the perfect atmosphere to learn how to effectively communicate with people from all sorts of backgrounds, and age groups. Communication skills are some of the most important assets in life, and blogging can not only help to build those skills, but can give one an opportunity to see how the real world reacts to his or her thoughts.

Increases Openness.

Many people are insecure about expressing opinions because of fears regarding what others will think. However, because a blog can be created anonymously, the readers have no physical person to associate with their thoughts. Any negative judgements one’s readers may have about what he or she has written, is much less powerful in effecting the writer personally, when he or she has anonymity.

The deeper focus of college studies often causes one to further develop his or her belief systems, which creates new found opinions. Blogging can provide a medium for which to express those opinions, and helps the shy or hesitant overcome the fears of doing so. Writing down one’s thoughts for others to read, and receiving good responses from the audience (which is more likely than negative responses); boosts confidence, and assertiveness. So, in addition to writing practice, and experiencing others perspectives, blogging can contribute to improvements that positively affect one’s personality.

Improving One’s Professional Reputation.

Starting a blog focusing on areas of professional studies, that expresses well thought-out opinions and ideals concerning the subject, can help to present one’s academic abilities. The readers, whether they are professors, friends, family, or potential employers, are able to get a better picture of who he or she is academically. Impressing the audience with valid questions, and well researched information regarding the topic of study, leaves others seeing him or her in a new light; essentially boosting one’s professional reputation.

Adds an Element of Fun to One’s Studies.

Blogging, even about serous topics, can be fun. One can not crack jokes or make humorous comparisons in the academic papers he or she writes in class. However, blogging gives one the ability to incorporate humor if he or she so chooses. This freedom of expression can lighten the mood, which often makes learning more enjoyable. Starting a blog using My College Blogger can give one an opportunity to tell the world what he or she thinks of it.

Social networking is quickly becoming the way for people to communicate, especially college students. Comments sparked by content on My College Blogger can easily be continued through social media. The trick to combining content from My College Blogger with other forms of communication is finding a creative way to integrate social media into your blog. Social networking can seem like an added chore sometimes, but with a little planning, it can be an easy way to maintain communications in a busy life.

Narrow It Down

You don’t have to be on everything. There are numerous social networks from Facebook and Twitter to MySpace and Bebo and countless others. Keeping up with all of them can take up way too much time and “friends” who visit you on each site may get annoyed if you do not update on a regular basis. Decide which of these networks are the most relevant for you.

Establish Goals and Prioritize

Figure out what your goals are in terms of social networking. Who is your target audience? Choosing the right social networks will save you time and wasted energy. It is easy to say that you want to be everywhere, but realistically you are not going to be able to keep up with every social network site on the Web and keep up the content to justify it. Choose a few that fit your needs.

Create a Profile

Adding a little personality to your profile sets you apart from everyone else. Include your name, age, location (you can be general on this) and some interests. If you are targeting potential employers, include your education, current job status and a brief summary describing yourself and why you are on that particular social network. Include random facts such as hobbies and interests. The more information and personality you express, the more you get out of your social networking experiences.

Keep Photos Decent

It is always fun to upload pictures to your social networks, but remember that whatever you post establishes your online reputation. Choose photos that reflect who you are and your interests. For a more casual feel, you can add pics of your favorite bands, movies and other interests. You may want to save the more casual photos for the social networks you use for your friends and keep others more professional.

Be Consistent

If you have multiple profiles on different networks, be consistent. Use the same screen name and same general photos for all profiles. This gives you more recognition and makes it easier for friends or blog followers to find you. This gives you wider exposure and establishes your identify.

Follow Guidelines/Keep it Positive

Social networking should be a positive experience. Each network has rules and guidelines to follow. Adhere to these. Do not use social networks for revenge or to pick fights. This gets you blocked or banned. If you receive comments that are negative or nasty, delete them or report the person if it is serious enough. Don’t stress out over it though. Social networking should be fun.

Choose a Focus

Each network is different. Some focus on specific interests. Some are more professional, while others are more casual. If you are trying to promote your band, you probably do not want to be on a network that targets professional business people more concerned with 401Ks than where your band is playing this weekend.

Be Interactive

When building up your social networks, whether for professional or personal reasons, you need to be interactive with your followers and online friends. If you know you won’t keep up with a particular social network, do not join in the first place. You will quickly lose followers and interest. Update your content and photos. The more interactive you are, the more you will get out of your social networking experience. Sign into each of your accounts on a regular basis and respond to messages and comments.

The purpose of My College Blogger is to introduce new technological developments and to pass on relevant information about Facebook for interested bloggers. Well, you don’t necessarily have to be a blogger or even possess any writing ability to enjoy the articles posted by our editorial staff. So we are recruiting readers. Yes, we are looking for people who like to stay “in the know” and learn about important topics as they are trending. And not some time after the fact.

Just remember some of the articles are just fun facts and others are interesting tidbits that we think would be useful to share with our readers. And as the terminology “tidbit” suggest by definition, it is the goal and intent of this network to always present “pleasing bits” of information, geared towards our educated, liberal minded readers. We are extending an invitation for our readers to join us as we write responsibility to keep you informed about what is happening around the Internet, on and off line. This is a private network of college blogs, striving to keep you informed about the latest developments in social media.

No, the term “liberal” is not used to drum up any type of political support. It’s used to reference the fact that we believe in expressing our views about Facebook changes or proposed changes and how they may or may not affect our readers. Our long term goal is to build on the concept of blogs by introducing this trend in college blogging moving forward in a new direction.

We encourage our readership to grow as we form a network within a social network so to speak. When we post a new blog article, it’s because something interesting happened that we want you to know about by sharing the informative articles with you.

The editorial comments and articles posted are in the spirit of free speech and we encourage our readers to approach our blog articles with an open mind.

So far the articles posted haven’t been viewed by a worldwide audience-yet! We’re stepping up our efforts to reach college bloggers worldwide to introduce them to this latest trend in blogging.

In addition to providing technology related news and introducing a new tech gadget as soon as it’s publicly released, our blog articles are intended to keep our readers informed, we’re dedicated to keeping college bloggers abreast of changes and the latest developments at Facebook.

What we hope to achieve is a network of college bloggers who aren’t just ordinary Facebook users, but are people who are prone to share their ideas by exchanging information and ideas in response to posted blog articles. We let others read our blogs in hope of encouraging an exchange of good ideas.

My College Blogger is the first informational blog of its kind. We employ the popular Internet blogging tool WordPress which allows us to create and post new creative ideas as soon as they happen.

We want to be known for more than just “College Blogs for your Private Social Network.” There’s no other source on the Internet where college students can gather for a virtual meeting of the minds with other tech geeks, to learn from one another in a social media environment.

It’s pointless to create an interactive social media network without participants. The point of our blog articles is to present relevant information to you. Because if something is happening to Facebook that might affect you, you might just want to know about it. As Facebook grows in popularity, there are bound to be numerous tweaks to the “social media machine” to make it bigger and better.

College blog networking is truly the next frontier that is emerging to connect people with common interests. We hope to keep you hooked by keeping you informed about things that matter. If it happened today, you might want to know about it sooner rather than later. Don’t just check us out, join us, we promise not to hide anything from you. We’ll keep you interested by presenting topics and subjects that matter. And not just what matters to us, but helpful information about things that you want to know.

So join us as we help to shape the future of college blogs and change your mind about tech geeks forever. It’s only information if it’s shared while it’s relevant and if you’re interested in reading and participating. My College Blogger might even surprise you in the future by writing about the latest developments at Facebook.

There are no rules set in stone when it comes to writing for a blog like My College Blogger. There are, however, some basic tips to get people to read your blog. Creating a blog on My College Blogger is fairly easy, the hard part is presenting the content in way that grabs people’s attention and invites responses. Here are a few simple tips to create a blog that is fun to read and likely to encourage feedback.

• Pick a topic – Don’t be all over the place with your blog. Pick a single topic. Try to not to be too broad. For example, a blog about college sports will get some attention and generate comments. The problem is that comments will quickly break down into subgroups with responses all over the place. A better approach for a sports topic would be focus on a particular college team or even a specific upcoming game.

• Stay on topic – Opinions in a blog are generally encouraged, welcomed and accepted. However, the content should relate to the general theme of the blog. It is easy to get distracted and place random comments in your blog. Realistically, most readers do not care what you had for breakfast or what you watched on TV last night. Define a topic and stay focused. This is a good way to develop a loyal following. People can share mundane details on Twitter and Facebook. A blog is topic driven.

• Be informative – If you are speaking with some knowledge about a topic, keep up with the latest information. If it is a sports blog, have updated player info and scores. If you are blogging about life on campus, make sure you have reliable sources and provide accurate information. Reputation is important if you want a blog with some credibility. If you are offering an opinion, make it clear that it is your opinion. This protects you from possible legal action.

• Stay current – Old news is no longer news. Keep up with your blog. Blogging everyday can be a shore sometimes, but it is important to update it frequently. Readers do not like to read old news. Opinions on old events will not spark much interest unless you are witty or humorous about how you work it into your blog. Stale, outdated content does not interest readers.

• Keep a schedule – Blogging requires some time and effort. Obviously, you are not expected to sacrifice your class work or personal life. Readers generally understand a lapse for holidays, spring break or a vacation. However, going weeks or months without a new post will turn readers off. Blog followers have a short attention span. New blogs pop up constantly. If you ignore your audience, they will quickly move on to another blog.

• Simplicity and clarity – Blogs should be easy to follow, read and understand. While “internet speak” may seem cool, not everybody is going to know what AQAP, YNK, NSM, FMI and SALTS means. Stay away from idioms and acronyms that are not common knowledge. Sometimes it is worth the effort to explain what you want to say with full sentences and words.

• Use keywords – Save the details for the actual blog post. The title of a blog should not be longer than 10-12 words. Try to include keywords in the title to increase the online visibility of your blog. Scatter keywords related to the blog topic throughout the post when possible. This doesn’t mean you have to out of your way to throw in keywords though.

• Content and substance – You need content to attract attention on search engines. The more content you have, the better. Search engine ranking changes daily. You need to have enough substance to your blog so you can easily be found by those with similar interests.

• Archive old blogs – Regular followers of your blog will generally know what you are talking about and what you have covered in the past. New readers may want some background. This goal can be achieved by archiving old blog posts. This is a good way to have some extra content for new readers to check out to get a feel for the general tone of your blog.

• Proof-reading – Spelling and grammar can goes out the window when it comes to emails, texts and short Twitter posts, but in blogs spelling and grammar mean clarity. If you are going to mention names, make sure you get the spelling right. Correct spelling also avoid embarrassing misunderstandings.
